This 'thicknesser' was in my Dad's pattern shop from before we were born! Once he retired, it moved home to his shed, but didn't get a lot of use. Eventually I had to start clearing out the shed before the roof collapsed on it. Sold it yesterday for $200 to someone with a country property. I have a Dewalt DW735 thicknesser and if the build quality and performance of the DW733 is anything like the DW735 go for the Dewalt. And you are correct I could hardly find any reviews of the Fox F22-561, that would make me think twice about the Fox. Most decent entry level combination planer thicknessers cost 10 times that. When I was thinking about getting a machine, a friend of mine who is a cabinet maker and guitar maker advised me to get basic 6' SIP planer and a 13' Axminster thicknesser. He set me straight about planing and thicknessing being two quite different functions. Fox original spare parts for to replace broken parts for to fix Planer and Thicknesser F22-564/250. I purchased one of these a few years ago. The roller drive cogs (2 for front, 2 for back) are the weakness as they are cast, not forged, and break under strain. Cheap and easy to replace.. samecas Axminster and Charnwood 13' thicknessers, probably made in the same factory, badged for different suppliers..

Fox Planer Thicknesser Manual Parts
greg | 12/11/2008 20:02:00 |
16 forum posts | Hey everyone, just a quick appology the thread title, i have read through the planer thicknesser threads but i cant find anything that will help me. This is my situation. I have around £200 to spend on a planer thicknesser, and i really need some advice. i really dont know what quality is like, as the quality makes i.e makita, metabo, dewalt are all hellishly expensive Im an 18 year old, and i really do not have a lot of spare cash, everything in my workshop i have saved for over the past few years. Okay so here i go, i have looked at the following makes and models erbauer erb 052 BTE (£159.99) - screwfix fox F22-564 (approx £200) - Various internet site, including ebay Woodstar PT85 (approx £200) - screwfix, and various other sites Rexon Ji55OBQ (£149.99) - screwfix (reviews ive seen are not great and does seem abit small SIP 01497 (approx £180) - Not sure what to think of this make perform cc10t thicknesser (approx £149) Obviously not a planer and thicknesser but was thinking about getting the perform planer seperately - i hear good stories about perform, but some not so good stories too perform CCNP Planer (approx £100) bit small, but seems okay, would be with the above perfrom product i think to be honest the above are the only tools that seem finacially fesable. I want atleast 6' x 6' but preferable 8' Please any help would be very much appreciated, thanks again |

1601 forum posts 73 photos | Hi Greg, the only advice that I can give you is to wait and save up a bit more to get something a bit bigger and better. I bought a sheppach 10 x 6 planer thicknesser back in 2000 and have always been happy with it. You usually find some of these machines on ebay. I have had a quick look at some of the planers that you are looking at, and these planers all seem to be powered by a brush motor, and underpowered, especially if you want to plane hardwoods. Also these are what I would describe as portable bench top machines, and if you are serious about your woodwork you would soon find that any of these planers would be inadequate. I have found that at 10' wide my planer can sometimes be too small for my needs. I found this sheppach, dewalt, both on ebay. Sony walkman mp3 player software download for mac. Al |

16 forum posts | Hey al, thanks for your advice, the problem i have is that i find it hard to save when i have a car to run (land rover) and a gf to keep happy (expensive! lol) its recently been my birthday and i want to make a cot for my brother and sister in law, and im dying to get one, also, i dont have enough floor space to accomadate a large planer/thicknesser, as i need to get the car in the garage too you dont rate any of the above how ever? the reviews for the erbeaur are very good to be fair, its just its never in stock |

1745 forum posts 1 photos 74 articles | Hi Greg, have you considered second hand? If I had a £200 budget for a planer thicknesser I'd look on ebay for a used Record, Kity or Scheppach. The current Record PT60 is a nice machine with a smallish footprint (beware of cheap copies!) and it's been around for years. New it's around £600 but because it's been around for so long in one form or another there are some second hand bargains to be had. I had a Kity 1637 for years and it did me very well. Again, this is a really nice proven machine which you could probably pic up for somwhere between £200 to £300. Best of luck |

1601 forum posts 73 photos | I know that I have bought cheap power tools and machinery and usually regret the purchase, and end up having to buy a better tool/machine. The old saying is true, you get what you pay for, although sometimes you pay a bit more for the name (dewalt). However I also believe in paying for usage, in other words if I am only going to use it once every now and then I will buy a cheaper tool, but if I intend to use it every day then I will buy a decent tool. I bought a cheap SDS drill which had a lot of use, and it lasted 5 years, and I bought a hitachi 18v drill driver that was in daily use when I was self employed, and 3 years later its still going strong. At the end of the day ,if its what you want and your research informs you that it is the right choice then buy it, however if you can go to somewhere like machine mart and have a look at what your thinking of buying. Woodworking shows can be worth visiting, as usually they have demonstrations taking place. Al |

16 forum posts | whats the best type of motor to have on a planer thicknesser then? is there anyway of replacing the motor on a cheaper piece of machinery? |
Mike Garnham | 12/11/2008 21:57:00 |
4114 forum posts 1 photos | Greg, Ben is right....you can get some fantastic machines second hand for that sort of money, but the new ones are terrible! For that budget they will be so light you will be pushing them over as you feed the boards in, and they will be weak and woosy. I paid £90 for mine second hand, and just had to buy a new belt. Ebay, forums, woodworking magazines etc....there are plenty of places to look. Just don't waste your money on a cheap new machine. Don't forget...we need pictures!!! Mike |

1745 forum posts 1 photos 74 articles | Greg, for floor standing machines try and get something with an induction motor. Most cheap machines are fitted with brush motors which are a lot louder and don't tend to last as long. A good induction motor is a pleasure to use, it'll purr along all day long ~ yet another reason to buy second hand. |
greg | 12/11/2008 22:41:00 |
16 forum posts | the reason i ask about the motor, is i have a spare induction motor out of a very old washing machine, but its a suffolk one, and its brilliant, i use it to run my homemade lathe |

1745 forum posts 1 photos 74 articles | Not sure about replacing the motor Greg. I guess it would depend on the machine in question. |

16 forum posts | okay guys, thanks for all your help, i'll just have to have a think about it and a talk with my dad, maybe i can persuade him to go halve's although id really rather not! |

61 forum posts 4 photos | Greg, all these comments are dead right buy the best you can, I stared out about 25years ago and in the first couple of years I had a graveyard of cheap broken tools lying around the workshop, sell that bloody landrover and get a cheap runaround and buy something decent for the workshop with the remainder. It's a shame as I've actually got a dewalt 1150 9' planer thicknesser covered in dust in my workshop. All it needs is some new nuts which hold the blades in. If all else fails get rid of the expensive girlfriend.......when will you nippers ever learn! |
Woodworker | 13/11/2008 10:03:00 |
1745 forum posts 1 photos 74 articles | Greg, I've just had a quick look on ebay: Little Wadkin machine - absolute peach! I used to use an identical machine to this at college - best machine I ever used. If I had the space I'd snap this one up! I don't think you'll have to break your budget. There's some great machines here going for the right sort of money. |
greg | 13/11/2008 20:08:00 |
16 forum posts | THE LAND ROVER STAYS!!! the girlfriend go! but the landrover stays!! haha, how old is that dewalt? where are you from? |
Olly Parry-Jones | 13/11/2008 21:56:00 |
2776 forum posts 636 photos | Welcome to the forum, Greg. I agree with what's been said about going for a older machine second hand and getting real value for money. You've got to then look at the motors though, which tend to three phase only on many of the industriial machines - meaning you would have to replace it with a new single phase motor (MONEY!). With something like the Kity though, you wouldn't have this problem. Still, you may need to check to see that it'll run on a 13 amp supply (some larger models are only 16 amp). |
